Material Damping Properties

Most anti-vibration pads are made from materials with excellent damping characteristics. These materials, such as rubber or specialized elastomers, can absorb and dissipate energy. When a vibrating force from machinery is transmitted to the pad, the internal molecular structure of the pad material deforms. As it deforms, the material converts the kinetic energy of the vibration into heat energy. For example, in a factory setting, a vibrating pump placed on an anti-vibration pad made of high-quality rubber will have its vibrations absorbed as the rubber molecules stretch and contract, gradually reducing the amplitude of the vibrations.

Isolation of Vibrations

The pads also work by isolating the vibrating source from the surrounding structure. They act as a buffer between the equipment and the floor or mounting surface. By doing so, they prevent the vibrations from being directly transmitted to the building's foundation or other adjacent equipment. The design of the pad, with its specific thickness and stiffness, determines its isolation efficiency. A thicker pad generally provides better isolation as it allows more space for the vibrations to be dissipated before reaching the supporting surface.

Resonance Avoidance

Anti-vibration pads are also designed to avoid resonance. Resonance occurs when the frequency of the external vibration matches the natural frequency of the system (including the equipment and its support). The pads are engineered to shift the natural frequency of the equipment-pad-support system to a different range than the typical vibration frequencies of the machinery. This helps to reduce the amplification of vibrations and provides a more stable operating environment for the industrial equipment.
